What’s wrong with my RCA TV?

Because it doesn’t have power, your RCA TV won’t turn on. Aside from that, your device might not turn on because of problems with its hardware or software. If this happens, check the power cord and source to see if they are in good shape. Then, if you need to, do a soft or hard reset on your RCA TV.

RCA TV won’t turn on: 7 solutions

1: Look over your remote.

Before you decide that your RCA TV is broken, you should make sure it’s not something else.

Keeping this in mind, let’s start with your TV remote.

If you press the power button on your RCA TV and it doesn’t turn on…

Then you may be holding a broken remote.

And do you know why that’s probably happening? Batteries are dead.

So, when was the last time you changed the batteries in your remote?

If so, you might be looking at a remote for your RCA TV that doesn’t work and can’t turn it on.

Switch out the pair you have now and see if it will work this time.

If it did, that’s one fix on our list that worked.

2: Check the connection between the remote and the TV.

There are times when the remote doesn’t work with the TV.

This is especially clear with remotes that connect wirelessly to the TV.

The two devices just stop talking to each other for no clear reason.

It’s annoying, right?

When this happens, you might think that your RCA TV won’t turn on. But it doesn’t work when you press the remote.

But don’t be afraid.

You just need to connect your remote to your TV again.

Note: The RCA remote works with a variety of devices.

It works with:

  • Cable boxes.
  • Boxes for satellite TV.
  • Devices for streaming.
  • Players for DVDs and Blu-rays.

So, the process for pairing your device should be unique to it. Regardless…

Here’s how to set up your RCA remote control.

Step 1: Look for the list of device codes that came with your device.

You can also find the same list on RCA’s website if you can’t find your copy.

Look for the brand of your device on the list. Note the codes that are written next to it.

Step 2: Press and hold your remote’s TV button.

Wait for the center Power button to light up.

Step 3: Enter the first code

Enter the first code for your brand while still holding down the TV button.

Note: During this process, don’t let go of the TV button.

Step 4: See if the power button lights up.

If it does, you’ve entered the right code and connected the remote correctly.

But what if the power button flashes more than once?

This means you put in the wrong code, and pairing is not working.

Then, do the same steps again and again until the device accepts the right code.

3: Check the wires and cords of your TV

Now, let’s look at something else.

Let’s say that your remote control is working fine.

It has new batteries and is properly connected to your TV.

Still, your RCA TV won’t work…

You can also look at the wires and cords that go to your TV.

Have you moved your TV in the last few days?

Or did you move things around in your living room when you cleaned it?

Why does it matter either way?

Well, it’s possible that when you moved your TV, a wire or cord came loose.

So, if the cord doesn’t fit right in the socket, your device won’t get any power.

If the AV cables aren’t plugged in, it also won’t have any sound or video.

It’s easy to miss these kinds of things.

But it’s easy to fix them.

I suggest taking out all the cords and cables to make sure they are all plugged in right.

Then plug them back in one by one to make sure they stay in place.

While you’re there, check to see how the cable is doing.

Make sure none of them are torn, cut, or broken. If there are, you should get new cables to replace them.

4: Check the source of the power

While we’re talking about broken cables, it’s possible that your RCA TV won’t turn on because it has no power.

This time, though, the problem isn’t with your RCA TV or RCA remote.

Instead, it has to do with the electrical outlet where you plug in your device.

So, check to see if the outlet is working or not.

You can plug in something else, like a lamp or a phone charger.

If these things don’t work either, your outlet probably tripped and died.

When that happens, all you have to do to see if your RCA TV still works is plug it into a different outlet.

If it still won’t turn on, you probably have a bigger problem on your hands. So, let’s move on to the next step, which is…

5: Turn off the feature that locks the Front Panel Access.

The Front Panel Access (FPA) lock is a special feature of the RCA TV.

It’s a parental lock that makes it impossible to turn on the TV without the remote.

Because of this, it can keep kids from using the device.

So, how will you turn on your TV without a remote when the FPA is turned on?

Don’t be afraid.

All you have to do is do a soft reset on your TV.

You will get rid of the parental lock settings if you do this. It will also put everything back to how it was before.

Just unplug it and leave it alone for 5 to 10 minutes.

After waiting, plug the TV back in and try to turn it on without the remote.

If your first try doesn’t work, try it again, but turn off the TV for the night.

If this trick doesn’t work, you can reset your device to factory settings instead.

When you do a full reset, all settings, including FPA, are erased.

Follow these steps to start a full reset on your RCA TV without a remote:

  1. Find the physical button on your RCA TV that lets you reset it.
  2. Press and hold the reset button for 20 to 30 seconds with a small tool.
  3. Wait until you see the RCA TV logo on the screen.
  4. Start the reset process, and when it’s done, set up the device again.

6: Check your TV’s backlight for problems

LED TVs often have trouble with the backlight.

This is especially true for units that have been around for a while.

Most of the time, an electrical problem is to blame when an LED TV’s backlight doesn’t work.

If this happens, when you turn on your TV, the screen will be black.

Your TV isn’t completely broken, though.

So, how can you tell if your TV’s backlight is broken now?

It’s easy.

All you have to do is shine a flashlight close to your LED TV.

Then, look at it to see if you can make out any pictures.

It would be hard to make out. But this shows that the backlight on your LED is broken.

If that’s the case, the best way to get it fixed quickly is to bring it to RCA Support or a service center.

7: Replace damaged capacitors

Capacitors are tiny diodes that are on the power board of your device.

When one of these capacitors gets broken, it can stop all power to your TV.

So, it’s likely why your RCA TV won’t turn on all of a sudden.

Even though it can be scary, it’s not hard to replace broken capacitors.

It only needs the most basic tools and the least amount of experience.

You would need the following things to do this:

  • Pliers
  • Solder.
  • Screwdriver.
  • A soldering iron.
  • Capacitors that can be replaced.

So, here’s a quick step-by-step guide on how to replace bad capacitors.

Step 1: Take your TV off the wall.

Carefully take your TV off the wall or off its stand. Make sure you don’t lose any of your TV’s screws.

Open your RCA TV’s back case. Put your TV on a flat surface to do this.

You can protect the screen from getting scratched by putting a soft cloth or sheet on the surface.

Step 2: Open your TV’s back case.

Take apart everything until you can get to the electrical boards inside the TV.

Then you’ll need to find the power board and pull it out of the TV.

The capacitors that look like batteries are on the power board, which is a circuit.

Step 3: Look at the power board and find the capacitors that aren’t working.

Leaks or a bulging end are usually signs that a capacitor is broken.

You can also test each capacitor on the board with a multimeter.

Then, use the pliers and solder to carefully take out the broken parts.

Then, solder the new capacitors in place.

Step 4: Put things back where they belong.

Make sure that each part is screwed in the right way.

Last, try to turn on your RCA TV after you’ve replaced the broken capacitors.

Bonus: Reset your device.

Still nothing working?

There may be major software or firmware problems with your TV from time to time.

The easiest thing to do when this happens is to do a full factory reset.

This process puts the device back to the way it was when it came out of the box.

It gets rid of all updates, apps, and software that you have installed.

If the device has a problem, the reset should help fix it.

Many people don’t fully reset their TVs because it deletes everything on the device.

If you don’t mind resetting your RCA TV, here’s how:

  1. Click on “Menu.”
  2. Click on the tab for Options.
  3. Choose Reset.

Is there a button on an RCA TV to turn it off?

On an RCA TV, the reset button is either on the back or the bottom of the unit. Depending on the type of TV, it can be a push button or a key with a hole for a pin. You can do a full factory reset on your device by pressing the reset button.
